Spinal cord injuries come with considerable risks

On Behalf of | Jan 2, 2026 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Motor vehicle crashes can jar the body in damaging ways, some of which can lead to permanent damage. Injuries to the spinal cord are among those that can change the course of a person’s life. This type of injury can occur in a variety of manners and can have a host of different effects.

One of the most important things for a person who may have a spinal cord injury is to get immediate medical care. This can help them to learn about the type of injury and how they can expect that it will affect them.

Spinal cord injuries are complete or incomplete

There are two primary designations of spinal cord injuries—complete or incomplete. A complete injury doesn’t have any nerve pathways connected at the site of the injury because they have been fully severed. This type of injury isn’t likely to allow the person to have a full functional recovery.

An incomplete injury still has some nerve pathways connected at the site of the injury. This means that the person may recover at least partial function as the injury heals.

Injury location is important

The location of the injury is another important factor as to how the person is affected. The effects of a spinal cord injury always occur below the site of damage. If the injury is higher on the spine, a larger portion of the body is likely to be affected, and this can include more than the limbs. Internal organs can also be impacted by the injury.

Spinal cord injuries are costly and can often result in an inability to work in the same manner as before the injury. Victims may decide to seek compensation for the financial damages, but the time is limited to file this case. Working with someone familiar with this matter might be beneficial for these cases.
