What benefits are available under workers’ compensation?

On Behalf of | Feb 27, 2025 | Workers' Compensation

If you’re injured at work in New Jersey, workers’ compensation can provide financial and medical support. The system ensures that employees receive benefits without needing to prove fault. Understanding what’s available can help you get the support you need.

Medical benefits

Workers’ compensation covers necessary medical treatment related to your injury. This includes doctor visits, hospital stays, surgeries, medications, and physical therapy. However, your employer’s insurance provider chooses the doctor, and switching providers requires approval.

Temporary disability benefits

If your injury prevents you from working for more than seven days, you may qualify for temporary disability benefits. These payments are typically 70% of your average weekly wage, up to a state-set maximum. Benefits continue until you return to work or reach maximum medical improvement (MMI).

Permanent disability benefits

If your injury leads to lasting impairment, you may receive permanent partial or total disability benefits. Partial disability applies if you can still work in some capacity but have a lasting injury, such as loss of function in a limb. Total disability benefits are for those who can’t work at all due to their injury. These payments may continue for life.

Death benefits for dependents

If a worker dies due to a job-related injury or illness, their dependents may receive death benefits. This includes weekly payments, typically 70% of the deceased worker’s wages, divided among dependents. Workers’ compensation also covers up to $5,000 in funeral expenses.

Getting the support you need

New Jersey’s workers’ compensation system provides important benefits, but delays and disputes can happen. Knowing your rights helps ensure you receive proper medical care and compensation.
