3 common ways people sustain traumatic brain injuries

On Behalf of | Nov 19, 2025 | Personal Injury

The human brain is incredibly powerful, but it is also relatively vulnerable to injury. Injuries to the brain do not necessarily heal. People who sustain traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) often face major medical expenses and lifelong symptoms. Those with TBIs may need to take legal action in pursuit of compensation, as they may have hundreds of thousands of dollars or more in lifetime losses.

What are some of the most common scenarios that cause TBIs where an outside party might be to blame?

1. Car crashes

Motor vehicle collisions are one of the most common sources of TBIs. There are many different mechanisms through which a collision could injure a vehicle occupant’s brain. While people may not necessarily notice TBI symptoms at the scene of a crash, they may need to see a doctor to determine if they sustained a brain injury.

2. Falls

When people fall, they can sustain numerous traumatic injuries, including TBIs. A restaurant patron who falls from a balcony with faulty banisters could sustain a TBI. Elevation isn’t necessary for a brain injury when a person falls. Slip-and-fall incidents can also lead to brain injuries if people hit their heads.

3. Physical violence

Gunshots and assaults are also common sources of brain injuries. People attacked by another person can end up with permanent injuries after a single punch in some cases.

Those adjusting to life with a TBI may need help holding the party at fault for their injuries accountable. Successfully filing a lawsuit after a car crash or other incident that causes a brain injury can help victims pay for medical care and offset their lost income.
