Road trip behaviors that significantly increase car accident risk

On Behalf of | Sep 10, 2025 | Car Accidents

Road trips are exciting opportunities to explore new places, enjoy scenic drives and spend quality time with family or friends. Yet, the thrill of the open road sometimes makes drivers underestimate the risks that come with long hours behind the wheel.

Road accidents remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries and fatalities, many of which are preventable. Recognizing and avoiding dangerous behaviors while on the road can go a long way in helping to ensure a road trip is both enjoyable and safe.

Speeding and aggressive driving

The excitement of reaching a destination or keeping up with fast-moving traffic can encourage drivers to exceed speed limits or drive aggressively. Speeding reduces the time required to respond to sudden changes in traffic. Aggressive behaviors such as tailgating, frequent lane changes and road rage also escalate accident risks.

Distracted driving

Long drives can tempt drivers to check their phones, adjust navigation apps, eat snacks or engage in lively conversations with passengers. Even a few seconds of lost focus can have devastating consequences when driving at high speeds. Drivers should minimize distractions by:

  • Setting up playlists and navigation before departure
  • Keeping food and drinks within easy reach
  • Encouraging passengers to help manage phones or directions

This simple preparation plays a major role in helping to ensure full attention remains on the road.

Driving while fatigued

Fatigue is another road trip hazard that often goes unnoticed until it becomes dangerous. Long hours, irregular sleep and extended nighttime driving contribute to drowsiness that slows reaction times and impairs judgment. Common warning signs include:

  • Frequent yawning
  • Drifting between lanes
  • Difficulty remembering the last few miles driven

To counter this, drivers should plan regular breaks every two hours, switch drivers when possible and avoid pushing through exhaustion.

While road trips are about adventure and exploration, they also demand responsibility and awareness. Car accident survivors who are hit by reckless drivers on a road trip should seek legal guidance to increase the odds of being compensated for their injuries.
